Christmas Message

Mary wrapped the first Christmas gift.

That sounds like a very commercial statement to some, but if you think about it, she wrapped the first Christmas present for the rest of us. When she took baby Jesus from whoever helped her deliver her baby and wrapped baby Jesus in swaddling, she was wrapping the first Christmas present to the world.

Only the commercialization and the slow generational change in perception of the value of the lessons Jesus of Nazareth, who became the Christ, have eroded the importance of this present Mary wrapped up for us all. We have forgotten the value of that gift that Mary gave the world. When you consider that he was a Jewish man who set out to change the inequities not only in his religion but in the world's relationships with each other, then you realize the value of Mary's gift to us. Jesus was not trying to find or start a new religion. He was trying to fix the one that he grew up in. Jesus was preaching love, peace, and harmony with all humankind, regardless of who or what they believed in. He understood that humanity needed to accept each other for who we are and what we believe in as long as it did not cause harm to others. He was not concerned that the Romans worshipped a pantheon of other gods or that the Samaritans or others had other gods that they held higher than the one he followed and the one he became.

So when Mary wrapped Jesus in swaddling, she was wrapping a gift for all of man and womankind to pursue peace with each other, love towards each other, and harmony with all those we interact with, whether we agree with their views or not. These lessons that were repeatedly taught and repeated over and over by his apostles after his crucifixion have been lost to the ravages of time. Saint Peter and Saint Paul passed his teachings along, leading to the formation of a  church. It is known as the Catholic Church or universal church. The message of love, harmony with each other, and peace towards the world was the cornerstone of the teachings of Saint Peter and Saint Paul. You would be hard-pressed to find that in the teachings of most of the present-day churches. You will find that there is hate, exclusion, and dogma that is meant to bind you to a very narrow defined selection of scriptures in the Bible. The selected scriptures are used to further their agenda, not the Christ's teachings.

This is why the younger generation stepped away from organized religion like Christianity and chose to take a spiritual route. So, let's take a moment during this holiday season and realize that we need to embrace the first Christmas gifts given to us by Mary all those many thousands of years ago. We need to reembrace understanding of each other, love towards each other, and peace with all those around us. It should not matter if they have the same belief in the same denomination that we do. It should only matter if they are spiritually aware of the gift and the teachings that came from that gift.

I leave you with this thought. We need to follow Christ's Teachings, not worship Christ. Mary wrapped us up the perfect gift: A gift for all humankind. It is there for any one of us to unwrapped and embrace. It is the teaching of the baby she swaddled that day.

14 And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.

15 And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful.  Col. 3:14-15 (ESV)

I wish you a joyful Christmas with many blessings for the New Year.

Raising Our Voices

In  support of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and their Families

Violence and abuse affect women in every country and every walk of life. We are assaulted daily by social and news media accounts of the latest atrocities. Social scientists note that sexual discrimination, physical abuse, psychological or emotional abuse, sexual assault, rape, detention, isolation, control of money, shelter, time, food, etc., financial exploitation, trafficking, and other forms of abuse and violence against women respects neither race, ethnicity, culture, wealth, position, religious belief or age. Violence against women is rampant and is egregious. It is of particular concern with regard to Indigenous women. As a people of faith, we are called and required to raise our voices in opposition to these crimes and in support of the victims and their families.

In 2016, when First Nation peoples of Canada began calling attention to this plight there were over 5000. Since that time the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women movement has spread across North America. Federal governments in both Canada and the United States have passed legislation addressing the issues.

Canada is engaging with Indigenous organizations through It's Time: Canada's Strategy to Prevent and Address Gender-Based Violence (GBV), to put forward actions to help address violence against Indigenous women and girls and LGBTQ and Two-Spirit People. The Government of Canada continues to invest in housing, education, and the transformative reform of child and family services with a focus on prevention, ensuring children are connected to their language and culture, and keeping families together. The inquiry's interim report recognized strong links between the child welfare system and violence against Indigenous women and girls in Canada and identified a need for responsive, accountable, and culturally appropriate child and family services.

In the United States, the Department of Justice is committed to fully implementing Public Law No. 116-165, Savanna’s Act.  Signed into law in October 2020, Savanna’s Act was a bipartisan effort to improve the federal response to missing or murdered indigenous persons (MMIP), including by increasing coordination among Federal, State, Tribal, and local law enforcement agencies. The DOJ is focusing on five main areas: Consultations and Listening Sessions, Outreach and Training, Federal Law Enforcement Guidelines, State, Local, and Tribal Law Enforcement Guidelines, and

Data collection, access, and reporting.

Yet the number of missing and murdered Indigenous women continues to be an issue with the number of women and girls at over 4000.

Oglala Lakota holy man Black Elk (1863-1950) said, “It is not enough to have a vision. In order to have its power, you must enact your vision on earth for all to see. Only then do you have the power.”

We call upon all members of the Reformed Catholic Church and all people of goodwill who share our vision of a more just and equitable society to raise their voices in support of indigenous women. If you see something, say something. If you are speaking with your local representatives at the local, state, or federal levels, inquire for an update on what the government is doing to solve these cases.

In addition, we invite you to join us in this prayer for all those who are missing or have been murdered, especially on February 14 and May 5 of each year.

 Prayer

O God, the Great Spirit, who gives light and life to all creation, we place before you the plight of the Indigenous Women and Girls who are missing, trafficked, or murdered. We ask You to stir the hearts of all humanity to raise their voices in support of efforts to solve these cases. Be with the family members of those whose fate is unknown. Bring all your people together into one family forever. Amen.

Romans 8:38-39  (NIV)

38 For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, 39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Romans 8:38-39 (Codex Sinaiticus - oldest existing NT manuscript.

8:38 For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers

39 nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Do you notice the difference?  So next time someone tells me that the Bible has never changed and the words are exact, my answer is they are wrong.  Man has manipulated the words of God in the Bible multiple time throughout history to fit an agenda.  Take the current battle over homosexuality.  First, the word did not exist in the English lexicon until the late 1960s to 1970s, so there was no way it would have been in the Bible.  Secondly, the addition of the word into the Bible anywhere was forced on the publishers by the United State Council of Churches.    Just one example is 1 Corinthians 6:9-10 which is one of the six most quoted scriptures by the LBGQT+ haters.

The actual translation from the oldest known manuscript is as follows

Or know you not that the unrighteous shall not inherit God’s kingdom? Be not deceived: neither lewd persons, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor catamites, nor sodomites.

10 nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.

Now compared to the one with the anti-gay quote.

Or do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who have sex with men

10 nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.
Do you see the substitution?  We need to be very careful about what we quote and the true source.   There is a very vile agenda afloat that has nothing to do with the original teachings of Jesus nor with the teaching of Saint Peter or Paul.
